My first Tango teacher told me that this dance was named after the Afro/Cuban/Brazilian god Shango (Chango). It was his drums and Condombe whose influence we can still see in the early milongas. <BR/><BR/>Leaders should keep a statue of Chango in a prominant place in the house. Followers should keep a statue of Santa Barbara (His Catholic counterpart). <BR/><BR/>Favorite food and drink of the tango god include Okra, Apples, Rum, sugar, cigars, anise, clove, paraiso, peppermint, vanilla, and yerba mate. <BR/><BR/>You may eat, drink, or smoke these ingredients respectively to attract the energy of Chango with the intention of improving your tango skills. These things may also be offered to a statue of Chango/Santa Barbara along with a prayer or request. <BR/><BR/>Chango gives the gift of Iwa-Pele (good character) and those who work with him are Pitucos (elegant people) and are loved in the milongas. <BR/><BR/>My favorite spell is to drink the Yerba Mate before going to the milonga or tango class. Begin with a sugar cube but do not add another so that the last sips are amargo (bitter). Then eat an apple and offer another apple to Chango. You will then want to spit polish your shoes with a clean cloth and Just the tiniest bit of apple juice along with some drops of mate. This brings incredible good luck with skill and getting good dance partners. (Although it may ruin some of those fancy Comme Il Faut shoes.) Isobel was a self proclaimed witch and lived in Scotland in the mid 1600s.<BR/><BR/>The piece of music this week is in dedication to her sad, unfortunate end.
